One year ago DJBooth launched its partner site RefinedHype.com, and we’re proud to say that the response has been beyond anything we could have imagined. As a thank you to all the fans, artists, promoters and bartenders who have supported our mission over the past year, we’ve put together an all-exclusive mixtape, which we’ve perhaps not-so-cleverly titled RefinedHype: 1 Year Anniversary Edition (hey, at least it’s direct).

Mixed by former Best of the Booth Vol. 1 creator DJ Critical Hype, 1 Year Anniversary features brand new cuts from some of the emcees who frequented our pages heavily over the past 365 days, including K. Sparks, K. Beta, The Black Sunn, Mike Schpitz, King Mez, Dominique Larue and many, many more.

To the artists who contributed to the mixtape, the hundreds of others who’ve shared their dopeness on the site, the fans and the countless others who’ve supported RefinedHype, thank you. We can’t wait to show you what we have in store for the second year.

Owww, the inaugural leak off Thad Reid‘s forthcoming street album, could hardly have been more aptly titled, since it was a massive hit with most of our readers (and getting hit hurts, you know?). With world premiere numero dos, things are slightly less straightforward – while Reid and his collaborators do indeed deliver the lyrical freshness that’s become their par-for-the-course, those looking for a routine, everyday experience may find Same as We Ever Was a disappointment. Don. S, producer of Reid’s last feature, switches his game up dramatically here, cooking up a street-ready synth-brass instrumental as the Blue Collar Muzik rapper and his DMV-based cohorts, Inglorious Beta emcee K-Beta and D.C. buzzmaker RAtheMC, fire off their most potent lyrical ammunition in verses brimming with vivid braggadocio. Think Thad Reid hit the bullseye on this one? Then add his DJBooth-sponsored Target Practice mixtape to your list of projects to download this Tuesday, April 20.

DJBooth.net Rating (3.5/4):

"K-Beta is here, and he’s determined to restore that balance on his new album Inglorious Beta. One of a seeming flood of supremely talented artists to come pouring out of the previously overlooked DMV, Beta’s never been afraid to speak his mind – he did name his 2006 project Ni**er the Album – and it’s that willingness to pull back the curtain and reveal his real life, for all its successes and imperfections, that makes Inglorious Beta such a gripping listen. If you’re looking to throw on an album at your next house party that will get booties poppin, you’re going to want to look elsewhere. But if you’re in need of some quality hip-hop, look no further."

The 142nd entry in our DJBooth.net Freestyle Series comes courtesy of K-Beta, the DMV native who recently earned reader acclaim for Black Business and Come Closer. On his brand new, exclusive Paperbag Writer freestyle, the Inner Loop Records rapper flows over a Nigel Godrich-produced beat originally featured on Radiohead’s track of the same name. K-Beta is currently preparing for the April 1, release of his latest full-length, Inglorious Beta.

Readers can download a copy of the newly-released In the Booth (Volume 3), featuring exclusive freestyles 61 through 90, here! Volumes one and two are available for download here and here.

Born and raised in the D.C./Maryland/Virginia area, Lyriciss was inspired to start rapping at the age of nine after hearing The LOX' classic Money, Power, Respect LP, and continued to hone his skills over the course of his middle school and high school years. Now signed to indie label Inner Loop Records and production company EQuinox Professionals, the 22-year-old emcee is preparing for next Tuesday's release of his new, DJBooth.net-sponsored street album, The Practice.Read more here.
