Peace! Finally, here it is…the first single/title track from my upcoming debut album, The Balance. Grussle on the beat, me on the bars. This song embodies the mindstate I was in while writing this album…reflecting on my position in the hip-hop rat race, my personal life, and those around me while dealing with it all…enjoy it.

Who is Sketch?

When Nas crafted Illmatic or when Tupac penned Me Against the World they couldn’t have imagined that their music was the soundtrack to a gang of wild kids raised in Fox Mill, Virginia. Young Matt McGuiney and his friends, all from Middle Class suburban homes embraced the songs Inner City poverty and hustling. They drank, smoked and chased girls to this music. “There were a lot of kids in Fox Mill, Virginia who were into Hip Hop culture whether it be rapping, DJing, graf or breaking” Matt recalled of his hometown. He dabbled in graffiti but quickly traded in his spray can for the microphone. Paying homage to his graffiti roots, Matt adopted the stage name Sketch as he embarked on his new path.

Unlike his stint with graffiti, Sketch has dedicated his life to bettering himself at the craft of MCing. At the age of 16 Sketch gained the reputation as the guy you don’t want to go up against in all the local ciphers. His way with words landed him in the WPGC 95.5FM Friday Mick Fight battle where he slaughtered his competition for 8 consecutive weeks in a row. In 2007, The Source magazine recognized his grind giving him an Unsigned Hype feature coinciding with the release of his mixtape, Ill. As his buzz has grown he has rocked the same stage with artists like Wale, Raekwon, Lupe Fiasco, the Clipse and Nas. In the pursuit of his dream he has become a peer to the artist he grew up listening to with his friends.

After having released several mixtapes independently, Sketch has teamed up with long time friend and collaborator DJ J-Scrilla for his first album Virginia Tec-9. The joint project was formed out of mutual respect from two artists who have putting in work for years to make their mark on the DMV (DC, Maryland, Virginia) Hip Hop scene and beyond. It only made sense they would join forces and release the project together through J-Scrilla’s DC based label Inner Loop Records. Virginia Tec-9 is heavily influenced by the gritty, hard-hitting boom bap sound of the 90’s with an updated twist courtesy of J-Scrilla. The album features guest appearances from Nipsey Hussle, Roc Marciano, Reef the Lost Cauze, Nickelus F, Uptown XO of Diamond District and Inner Loop recording artist K-Beta. For all the Hip Hop fans who hunger for the return of hard beats and real lyrics, the wait is over.
